Harvey Lincoln WHITNEY [Parents] was born 12 Feb 1916 in Calloway, Minn. He died 13 May 1967 in Eau Claire, Wis. Harvey married Sylvia Marion LOVE on 16 Sep 1937 in Minneapolis, Minn.

Harvey was employed IBM Customer Engineer. He was educated Graduated Dunwoody Institute E-35 Electronics June 21, 1944.

Other marriages:
FARICY, Rosalie

The 1920 Census shows Harvey in Clay, Hardin, IA (Steamboat Rock).

The 1925 Iowa census shows Harvey in Owasa, Hardin, IA.

The 1930 Census shows Harvey in Concord, Hardin, IA (town of Garden City).

Harvey and Sylvia's brother Jim were attending Dunwoody Institute for IBM Customer Engineer training and education.  Harvey apparently went home with Jim to see Nana and Pa Love in Alexandria, and met Sylvia there.

Harvey worked as an IBM Customer Engineer in Minneapolis (1936 - 1949) and the Eau Claire area (1949 - 1967)) until his death in 1967.  He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends, and then with his sons as they grew old enough.  I remember the weekdays when he used to take a vacation day, and would write a note for me to take to school, saying "Jim has to go out of town with his father tomorow."  Then we would get up early the next morning, drive down to Nelson, along the Mississippi, and hunt ducks all day.  He enjoyed deer hunting, first with his friends, then with his friends and sons, and later on with just his sons.  There were a couple of years that we took the family's small travel trailer up to Bruce and used it as a base to hunt with the Brainerds (I had met Sharon by that time).  He said he thought we married so that I could stay in the house, instead of the uncomfortably cold trailer.

Harvey L. Whitney, 51, of 704 Sixth Ave., died at 1 p.m. Saturday in Luther Hospital following a heart attack.  He was a field engineer for
the I.B.M. corporation. Mr. Whitney was a member of the Knights of Columbus.  Surviving are his wife, Rosalie H.; two daughters, Mary Kay, at home, and Mrs. Glenn Buntrock, Winthrop, Minn.; two sons, John M. and James A., both of Madison; one sister, Mrs. Verle Perisho, Excelsior, Minn.; five grandchildren.
Services will be Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at Golden's Funeral Home and 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. J. Francis Brady will officiate.  The Knights of Columbus will recite a rosary in conjunction with the parish at 8:30 p. m. Monday in the Golden Funeral Home.  Friends may call from 3 p.m. Monday to the time of the service at Goldens'.

We (Sharon, Andy and I) had stopped in Eau Claire on our way to visit grandparents in Minneapolis/St. Paul the day he died.  He had been cleaning out the garage, but stopped to visit with us while we were there.  When we got to St. Paul Mom's twin sister Rosemarie told us the bad news and rode back to Eau Claire with us

Sylvia Marion LOVE [Parents] was born 1 Apr 1917 in Alexandria, Minn. She died 28 Nov 1942 in Minneapolis, Minn and was buried in Minneapolis, Minn. Sylvia married Harvey Lincoln WHITNEY on 16 Sep 1937 in Minneapolis, Minn.

According to the 1930 Census Sylvia was 12 years old and living with her family, Lindsay (age 50), Ethel (age 39), and James (age 15) at 806 Jefferson St. in the 4th Ward of Alexandria, Minn.

Her friend Virginia Kling (parents Fred and Gertrude) lived at 317 7th Avenue East.

BURIAL: Buried in Sunset Memorial Park, St. Anthony, St. Paul, Minn, not far from Lindsay's grave.

There is a story told to me by Nana Love that Sylvia insisted on visiting with her friend and high school classmate Virginia Kling when she(Virginia) caught tuberculosis (Somewhere in the old family pictures is one of Harvey with Sylvia in a hospital bed - I don't know whether this is the sanitarium or a regular hospital).  Virginia recovered but Sylvia caught tuberculosis and died.  Out of curiosity I have tried to follow up to see what might have happened to Virginia.  So far all I have found is a reference in the Clausing genealogy, in the entry for Claudia Carol Clausing (Royal, Herbert, Julius, Gustav, Friedrich), which is as follows: Claudia married Davis Lawrence Knapp, the son of William and Virginia (Kling) Knapp, June 1966 (although the Texas Birth Records show the marriage date as 29 Oct 1971).  Davis Knapp was born 6 Aug 1945 in Milwaukee, WI.  There is nothing to support that this record refers to the Virginia Kling that I am looking for except for the fact that the dates seem to fit.  Davis and Claudia had two children, David Randall Knapp (b. 29 Nov. 1966 in Dallas, TX) and Heidi Jean Knapp (b. 21 February 1968 in Port Washington, WI).

Andrew Melvin WHITNEY [Parents] was born 14 Jan 1871 in Alden, IA. He died 11 Oct 1953 in Radcliffe, Iowa. Andrew married Augusta Wilhelmine VIETH on 22 Mar 1906 in Gowrie, Iowa.

From Abbigail: Her Story and Others by Jerry Johnson

...many ballgames were played on a grassy area along the north side of the Iowa River...all the Whitneys (Giles' and Andrew's families) cheered for the 'Alden School Boys Nine', whose star second baseman was none other than Abbie's cousin, Andrew, Jr.
... in early October, 1902, while she was but a junior in high school, Abbie had watched her brother Martin and cousin Andrew make plans and then head west.  Their plan was to each take up a homestead in South Dakota ... which they did, each returning the proud owner of 160 acres near Pierre.  However, little time passed before word reached them that their land grants had been nullified with no compensation given in return.

Andrew finished high school in Alden and taught school for some time.  Then he started work at the Alden Creamery.  After attending school in Ames he worked for the next 35 years in creameries of his own at Steamboat Rock, Garden City, Whittemore, Owasa, and various other Iowa towns.  He lived at Radcliffe for the 25 years before his death.  He was a very alert and progressive man, always abreast of the times, and a devoted husband and father.  At the time of his death his sister Mabel lived in Alden, and his brother Charles Irving lived in San Pedro, Calif.

At the time of his father's (Andrew Clow) death (1909) the family was living in Whittemore.  The family was living in Steamboat Rock in 1918, according to a 'Cradle Roll' card sent to Harvey.  According to the 1920 census the family was still in Steamboat Rock, owned their home, and Andy was working as a buttermaker at the creamery.

In the 1930 Census the Whitneys are living in Garden City, Hardin County, Iowa.  The Census lists their location as 'the street south of Main St.' (I assume that is Maple St. in the current town).

Andrew's obituary is in the Hardin County Index for October 20, 1953

In the 1908 Iowa Yearbook of Agriculture it is noted that Andrew took first place in the buttermaker Whole Milk Class at the Iowa State Fair.  The family was living in Whittemore at the time.

Andrew is also listed as the buttermaker at Whittemore in the creamery section of the 1907 Legislative Documents, published by the Iowa General Assembly.

Augusta Wilhelmine VIETH [Parents] was born 22 Aug 1877 in Germany. She died 22 Aug 1965 in Eau Claire, Wis. Augusta married Andrew Melvin WHITNEY on 22 Mar 1906 in Gowrie, Iowa.

Augusta came to the US from Germany at age 16 (1893).  She settled at Hubbard first, and then moved to Alden.  She was married at Gowrie.  She and Andrew had three children, one, a son (Donald), preceeded her in death, as did her sister Wilhelmine CHarlotte Vieth (Minnie Lehmeier).  Besides her five grandchildren and six great grandchildren, she was survived by a sister, Mary Wood, of Des Moines.

She does not appear in the 1900 Iowa Census index.  She does appear in the national census in 1900, living in Sherman Twp in Radcliffe, IA.  She and her sister Mary Vieth are listed as servants in the hotel owned by George Finn.  Her date of immigration is listed as 1893 in the 1900 US Census.  The Ellis Island record shows that she left Bremen on the SAALE, arrived in New York on October 30, 1893, and her listed destination was Hubbard, Iowa.

She and her husband Andrew (Andie) are shown in the 1910 Census as living on Fifth Street in Whittemore in Kossuth County in Iowa.

In the 1925 Iowa Census she, Andrew, Harvey and Gladys are living in Owasa, Hardin county, IA.

They had the following children:

M i Harvey Lincoln WHITNEY was born 12 Feb 1916 and died 13 May 1967.

MACDONALD, Florence May

BURIAL: Buried in Sunset Memorial Park,St. Anthony, St Paul, Minn

Lindsay's WWI draft card (dated Sept 12, 1918) lists their address as Alexandria, and Lindsay as being self-employed as a delivery contractor.

The 1930 Census lists Lindsay's occupaation as delivery man and his industry as 'contractor'.
State of Wisconsin records show that Lindsay was an agent for Standard Oil at one time.  On the Minnesota death certificate his occupation is listed as 'gardener.'  I remember the horses that he had when he and Nana lived on S. Lyndale in Minneapolis.  I also remember one snowy night while we were still living in Minneapolis that he took us for an actual sleigh ride through the streets of the city before they were ploughed.  On Sylvia's birth certificate he is listed as working for Central Delivery.

The 1930 Census also lists Roy Love as living in Minneapolis, working for Standard Oil as a teamster, and married to Lanora (probably a misspelling of Laura from the census).  We always knew her as Aunt Laura.  I don't remember Roy.  For quite a few years Aunt Laura lived very close to Uncle Bert and Francis in Minneapolis.

Ethel Maud SAYER [Parents] was born 20 Sep 1890 in Hopton, Suffolk, England. She died 8 Jan 1984 in Minneapolis, Minn.. Ethel married Lindsay Samuel LOVE on 2 Mar 1914.

Other marriages:
VIZENOR, Joseph

My Uncle Jim remembers that Ethel and her brother Albert  came from England in early 1900's.  The Ellis Island site shows that he
arrived after Nana, in 1913.  Nana arrived in 1912 (she would have been about age 22 then), on the Carmania.   The Ancestry passport database shows that she left England May 4th, 1912, and that she claimed naturalization through marriage to Lindsey.  When Uncle Bert
came over in 1913 his Ship record shows that his destination was his sister's address, then given as 2101 W. Franklin, Minneapolis, Minn.

The passport records show that she planned to leave April 27, 1920, on the Carmania, and port records show Ethel returning through the Port of New York on September 6, 1920, on the Imperator.  The passport application states that the purpose of the trip was to visit her mother, Maria, who was in poor health.

Marriage Notes:

There is no record of Lindsay and Ethel's marriage in Douglas
County.

They had the following children:

Alden Township

transcribed by Brenda Wieland

A. C. Whitney, who is a furniture dealer of Alden, was born in
Franklin county, Vt., August 11, 1833.  He received a common
school education, and at the age of 16 began learning the
carpenter's trade.  In 1852 he moved to Lyons, Wayne county, N.
Y., where he worked at his trade.  At the expiration of two
years he was called home by the death of his mother, and
remained there until 1854, when he turned his steps westward,
and in January, 1858, located in Alden.  He immediately began
working at his trade, which he followed until he opened a
furniture store, in company with O. Willis, in 1868, and has
since continued in this business.  Mr. Whitney has held the
office of Township Clerk, and is the present village Treasurer.
He was married December 31, 1858, to Mary Todd, who was born in
Courtland county, N. Y.  They have nine children -- Ida M.,
Edith, Lewis, Leona, Minnie, Andrew, Charles, Mabel and Effie.

From : Abbigail: Her story and others by Jerry Johnson.

When only nineteen, and with both parents already dead, the
younger Irving and the older brother Andrew, each having
contracted a bad case of a current epidemic known as western
land fever, headed west together in search of a cure.  Traveling
on foot the men felt the search endless until their stop in
Independence IA, after having travelled over 1200 miles since
leaving their home in Highgate Springs, VT.  Working at the only
skill either knoew - carpentry - the two remained together at
Independence for almost two years.

In June of 1857, Irving, Andrew, and two of their friends,
Charlie White and Harry Hecker, purchased a wagon with the
intent of heading further west.  Upon reaching Alden the four
decided that they had gone far enough.  While boarding under the
hospitable roof of the local hotel operated by Mr. Cowles, the
two Whitney brothers again began work as carpenters, being hired
to assist in the construction of the Peabody house.
Furthermore, when Martin Davis arrived in Alden six months later
and purchased the hotel from Cowles, Irving was one of the two
remaining boarders mentioned in the Davis letter home.  In
contrast, Andrew had accepted the gracious invitation to move in
and board with the Rogers family.

From Andrew's obituary:

Andrew began learning the carpenter trade at the age of 16.  He
became a resident of Iowa in 1855, working as a carpenter in
Independence until June, 1857, when he, his brother Irving, and
others drove through to Alden.  He and the few who had preceded
him then began construction of the new town.  He was soon the
owner of a carpenter shop, which developed into a cabinetmakers
shop and then into a furniture store.

He was in the furniture business for thirty years.  Eleven years
before his death the store was destroyed by fire.  He was a
member of the first town council, and also served on the school
board and as treasurer.  Funeral services were conducted by Rev.
A.G. Axtel of the Congregational Church. He was interred in the
Alden Cemetery.

Andrew built his own home at the corner of Maine and Pearl
streets, and made most of the furniture in that home.

Mary Gardner TODD [Parents] was born 9 Nov 1836 in Killawog, NY. She died 25 Jan 1928 in Alden, Iowa. Mary married Andrew Clow WHITNEY on 31 Dec 1858 in Alden Iowa.

Interestingly,Mary is shown as being 10 years old in the 1850 Census.  If that is correct she was born in 1840 instead of 1836.

Attended school in Killawog until aged 11 (1847), when she became a member of the Deacon Rogers family of Marathon, NY, through the second marriage of her mother.  In 1856 the family moved to Alden, Iowa.  Her paternal grandfather was a soldier in the Revolutionary War.  She had two half-sisters, Mrs Eva Cleveland of Two Harbors, Minn, and Mrs Jennie George of Ashland, Wis, and two brothers, Henry William Todd and Chauncy Dwight Todd.  She also had a half-brother, Dr. R R Rogers of Jamestown, NY.
