Evelyn Sass has death certificate; James is buried in Smith Cemetery near Postville, Iowa, beside his wife,
Elizabeth French Ewing. The book, PAST AND PRESENT OF ALLAMAKEE COUNTY (Iowa), p. 136-137, states that James Ewing was 6 feet, 8

#2663.Perry Co. IN land records show transactions by J.V.Ewing from April 2 0, 1836 through August 28, 1854 when he purchased
property in School Lot 21 (near the north end of the bridge in Cannelton.) On Dec. 30 , 1854, James Ewing was appointed trustee
for property owned (and being reclaimed) by his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Davidson, in her divorce settlement against Vincent
Davidson. J.V. Ewing must surely have lived in Perry Co. at the time of this court action.Family tradition has this family arriving in Allamakee Co. IA in 1853 , but they must have arrived to take up permanent residence
after that time, possibly 1855 or 1856--anyway they were there by 1860.In the book GEORGE EWING, GENTLEMAN, A SOLDIER OF VALLEY FORGE, p.147 George, Sr. in a letter to his son Thomas indicates that
James has been well and it appears that James is making his home with his grandparents (1821). James would have been eight years
old at the time.It is wondered if the middle name of James was actually VICKARS rather than VICKERY. The Ewings had a strong tradition of naming
children after grandparents and other relatives. James' paternal great-grandmother's maiden name was VICKARS. At this time the
name VICKERY has not been located in relation to the Ewing family. In all official records located to date, James Ewing is
either referred to as James V. Ewing or J.V.Ewing without a middle name being indicated. Ewing descendants in Iowa have
traditionally referred to him as James Vickery Ewing, but it is wondered if this is correct.James Vickery, Abigail, and Thomas all eventually settled in Allamakee Co., Iowa near Postville and all three of their
spouses are buried in the Smith Cemetery.

He was a teacher in Farmington, Me., and a staunch temperance man. He was one of two men who advocated and worked for the abolition
of slavery in the town of New Sharon, Me. He was a farmer. He was a private in Captain Daniel Beale's company of militia in
Farmington, called out for defense of the seacoast and waiting orders at Hallowell, Me. from Sept.12 to Sept. 26, 1814, and attached to
Lt Col. David McGaffeys regiment.
