Witnessed a Bad Wreck
JONATHAN WARD went to Chicago Monday with two carloads of stock. There was a stock train just ahead of them before they got to Chicago, and a Pennsylvania passenger train struck this last mentioned freight and crushed the coach and two carloads of stock.
There were ten stockmen and a little boy in the coach all of whom were cut to pieces, and no trace of the little boy could be found. The cattle in the two cars ahead of the coach were either killed or were tossed out and got away. The conductor on the freight had a leg and an arm broken and a breakman had his back, arm and leg broken, but was not killed. The stockmen, who had been sleeping in the coach and who were killed, were from North and South Dakota.
Mr. Ward said that he and a stock buyer from Avoca walked a distance of about two miles from their train to the scene of the wreck and witnessed it all.
