The Rev. Francis B. Tanner, a Free Will Baptist Minister, was
born inHopkinton, RI, April 14, 1793. In the eigth year of his age his
parents settled in Floyd, Oneida County, NY. In 1807, during a
revival of religion, he became the subject of divine grace. At
thistime he was less than 14 years old. In 1809 he moved to
Plymouth,Chenango county, NY, where he united with the Baptist church.
Whenless than 15 he began holding religious meetings and was known
as "theBoy Preacher." In 1810 this church gave him a license to preach
andin 1813 he preached in Scipio, Cayuga County, devoting a portion
ofhis time to study. In 1815 he married Surviah Witter, and in
1816located in Genesee Co., now Orleans CO. NY, where he preached
about 12years, having been ordained to the ministry. In 1822 he moved
toEllington, NY, where his ministry was eminently successful, and
in1850 to Clymer where soon after impaired health compelled him to
giveup the active work of the ministry. He was the first settled
pastorof the church in Ellington.
